BLIAR MENTE : Todos os apoios à agricultura na UE estão comunitarizados, isto é são da exclusiva competência da União. Logo, é distorcer a realidade dizer que 40% do orçamento comunitário vai para a agricultura, que representa só 5% dos europeus. Isso é verdade, mas a comparção a fazer não é essa. Se o orçamento da comunidade representa cerca de 1% do PIB global dos 25 membros da UE (cerca de 10,6 triliões de euros) então a despesa com a PAC representa menos de 0,5% do PIB europeu, o que para 5% da população não pode ser considerado excessivo ! Por outro lado, as despesas comunitárias com a investigação são baixas porque essa política é sobretudo (a 95%)da competência dos Estados membros. Comparar coisas diferentes é demagogia.

O comissário europeu dos Assuntos Económicos e Monetários, Joaquin Almunia, classificou este domingo como «demagógico» o argumento do primeiro-ministro britânico sobre a necessidade de reduzir os subsídios agrícolas para investir mais em investigação. Em entrevista publicada no diário Der Tagesspiegel, Almunia diz que os argumentos usados por Tony Blair são enganadores, já que a «agricultura é financiada a 100% pelo orçamento europeu e a investigação e desenvolvimento em 95% pelo governos nacionais».
